The small but portentous trend of American households forgoing traditional television is growing. A recent Nielsen study found five million homes do not receive television via cable, satellite or broadcast, up from two million in 2007.

The Takeaway

Those five million homes account for just 5% of total households, but the consumers living in them—who skew young and multicultural—demonstrate some leading-edge behaviors that are likely to define the future of media consumption over the next generation, affecting the full spectrum of marketers and advertisers. Cost and lack of interest drive these consumers to ditch traditional TV delivery methods, but 75% still have a TV set in the home and use it to stream video content, play games or browse the Web. Consumers today, especially Millennials, are seizing control, convenience and mobility where they can get it, and, in many cases, this clearly means bucking traditional methods of content consumption. To be ahead of the curve, brands need to monitor this phenomenon to ensure they’re reaching the right consumers on the right screens at the right times.

The Atlantic’s inaugural Generations Forum will convene leading scholars, demographers, health professionals, and urban planners for a half-day event focused on the top political, social, and economic issues and opportunities facing America as an unprecedented demographic shift takes hold.

In the coming years, 77 million aging baby boomers will create a need for new infrastructure and services in communities across the nation, particularly in the housing and transportation sectors. As lifespan continues to increase, we must look for both common sense and innovative solutions in healthcare given the demands of an aging population. Meanwhile, increased longevity will leave many Americans concerned about a secure financial plan for the future.

Conversations will look at how breakthrough technology, urban transit trends, social mores, and new approaches to land development and architecture are creating more livable communities, and experts will assess the changing labor force for families that may lack the financial security of the previous generation.

In a series of panel discussions and keynote interviews, The Atlantic’s Generations Forum will analyze how individuals, communities, and policymakers can seize opportunities to adapt to this new societal structure and embrace the demographic realities of America’s future.

What do you do?

I specialise in consumer insights and the front end of innovation. My work has always been driven by the question why people behave in the way they do and how we can positively influence their behaviour. Insights are a really powerful way for brands to communicate with consumers in a new and engaging way, and I’m obsessed with wanting to write the next big insight! I believe in multidisciplinary innovation and am a qualified innovation coach for the Systematic Inventive Thinking method (SIT), what I call “the McGyver approach to innovation”.

How did you get here?

I started off in advertising research with Ipsos in Paris, which was the most glamorous start to market research one can imagine. Then I moved to London and, after a short stint with Ipsos Mori, I went on to work for Brainjuicer, where I gained a diverse expertise, from quant to qual research to workshop design and innovation processes.

Why do you do it?

I love the detective-like work that insights writing is: unearthing unknown or unmet consumer needs and then phrasing them in an exciting and resonant way. I also really enjoy discovering innovation spaces and ideas that result in real business advantage for our clients.

What have you learned during your career?

It’s all about the people you know and the relationships you nurture.

What do you do away from work?

I try to get my heartrate up: I run half marathons, have recently traded up to duathlons (which I completed on my foldable bike) and aim to run a marathon sometime soon. I also love motorbikes. And my latest hobbyhorse is Behavioural Economics, which has really helped me understand that people are a lot less rational than they think they are.

I wish...

...that teleportation existed – then I would spend every weekend in the South of France.
